Your Friendly Dental Hygienist

When you come to our Edmonton dental clinic for routine dental care, one of the many friendly faces you will see at Bonnie Doon Dental Associates is your dental hygienist.  Dental hygienists in Alberta are licensed professionals registered with a governing body. The role of our dental hygienists involves not only providing our patients with professional teeth cleaning services, they also play an important role in educating and helping the whole family build healthy life-long oral hygiene habits. They specialize in screening and offering prevention tips for oral cancers, and, they can assess any issues or concerns that come up during routine cleaning appointments and alert your dentist.

Your hygienist acts as one of the first teachers your kids will have about their teeth and how to take care of them properly. They can demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques and answer questions your kids may ask of them about their overall oral health.  Sometimes talking to the dental hygienist before seeing the dentist can give patients a better sense of questions to ask of the dentist regarding their individual oral health care.

In advance of your dental hygiene (cleaning) visit, the dental hygienist will have prepared for your dental appointment by providing a clean and sterilized area and tools to work with, ensuring your safety and comfort. Once they’ve greeted you, they will review your chart and medical history with you to identify any changes or issues since your last visit. Your current medical status is important information to share with your hygienist and dentist as there are medical conditions and medications that may influence your dental hygiene treatment.  They may examine your head and neck, and will perform a visual check of your tongue, gums, teeth and all other areas of your mouth, screening for any injuries or signs of oral cancer. To begin your cleaning, the hygienist will measure the attachment of the gums to your teeth and any existing pockets and record all findings on your chart. Your hygienist may take periodic x-rays and study them looking for any changes to your internal oral structures (teeth, roots, bone.) They will scale your teeth using a combination of hand or mechanical instruments removing hard and soft deposits (plaque and tarter) from your teeth.

Once your teeth have been thoroughly cleaned your hygienist will offer to polish and remove any mild staining before applying fluoride. Darker staining may require further treatment with a whitening solution, ask your hygienist or dentist about options for teeth whitening. If you suffer from tooth sensitivity, ask us about solutions that can help reduce your discomfort. We can also offer sealants to fill in deep grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of your teeth to help prevent bacteria and food debris from settling in hard to clean places.

Our hygienists can help you customize an oral care program for you and your family. We can offer information and advice that is personalized to your oral health care needs, including nutrition, smoking cessation, plaque control, and the use of various oral care products, their purpose and effective use. Call us and book your dental hygiene appointment with one of our friendly dental hygienists today.  Your smile will thank you!
